The dialect is a member of the Kita-Ōu dialect group within the
Tōhoku dialect of
Eastern Japanese. Other dialects in the group include dialects spoken in
Aomori, north-central
Iwate, coastal
Yamagata and the Agakita region in
Niigata Prefecture.
