Alexandria first appeared as an incorporated town on the 1880 U.S. Census, though no date of incorporation was mentioned and it did not appear again as a town after that census. It would not appear separately on the census again until it was made a census-designated place (CDP) in 2000. The precinct was also named Alexandria and first appeared on the 1870 U.S. Census. Racial and ethnic composition 2020 census As of the
2020 census, Alexandria had a population of 4,032. The median age was 41.8 years. 23.4% of residents were under the age of 18 and 17.7% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 91.6 males age 18 and over. 5.8% of residents lived in urban areas, while 94.2% lived in rural areas. There were 1,567 households in Alexandria, of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 54.6% were married-couple households, 16.1% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 23.2% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. of 2010, there were 3,917 people, 1,505 households, and 1,150 families residing in Alexandria. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 2.99. The population was spread out, with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39.2 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.
