It later passed to Fountains Abbey. From the 17th to the 19th centuries the manor formed part of the estates of the Dukes of Devonshire. The township became a separate civil parish in 1866, and in 1974 was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Hambleton District, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.
