2020 census As of the
2020 census, Chelsea had a population of 1,991. The median age was 35.3 years. 26.3% of residents were under the age of 18 and 15.9% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 85.7 males age 18 and over. There were 781 households in Chelsea, of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 39.2% were married-couple households, 18.6% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 33.3% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 924 housing units, of which 15.5% were vacant. In the city the population was spread out, with 30.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.9 males.
