2020 census As of the
2020 census, Cosmopolis had a population of 1,638. The median age was 44.0 years, with 20.4% of residents under the age of 18 and 22.9% 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 93.2 males age 18 and over. 100.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.0% lived in rural areas. There were 685 households in Cosmopolis, of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 46.4% were married-couple households, 18.7% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 25.7% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 712 housing units, of which 3.8% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.9% and the rental vacancy rate was 1.9%.

The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.87. The median age in the city was 41.5 years. 22.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.9% were from 25 to 44; 28.9% were from 45 to 64; and 16.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.
