2020 census As of the
2020 census, Cottage Grove had a population of 38,839. The median age was 37.0 years. 27.3% of residents were under the age of 18 and 13.0% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 95.8 males age 18 and over. There were 13,105 households in Cottage Grove, of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 63.4% were married-couple households, 11.6% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 18.5% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 13,445 housing units, of which 2.5% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.0% and the rental vacancy rate was 3.3%.

The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.27. The median age in the city was 35 years. 29% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29% were from 25 to 44; 25.9% were from 45 to 64; and 8.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.9% male and 50.1% female.

The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.32. In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
