At Tufts, Souvaine was department chair from 2002 to 2005 and (after a sabbatical at Harvard and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology) was reappointed as chair in 2006. She joined the National Science Board, a 24-member body that governs the
National Science Foundation and advises the United States government about science policy, in 2008, and was the chair of the board for 2018–2020. She also served for several years on the board of advisors for the Computer Science Department at the
University of Vermont as well as for the Computer Science Department at
