Nitro is a part of the
Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definitions from February 28, 2013, placed the population at 363,000.
2020 census As of the
2020 census, Nitro had a population of 6,624. The median age was 42.2 years. 21.0% of residents were under the age of 18 and 21.2% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 88.5 males age 18 and over. There were 2,912 households in Nitro, of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 37.7% were married-couple households, 19.8% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 33.9% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.82. The median age in the city was 40.5 years. 20.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.2% were from 25 to 44; 27.7% were from 45 to 64; and 17.3% were 65 years of age or older.
