In 2009, he was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for the sexual abuse of a seminarian, who was reportedly 18 years old at the time of the abuse. Due to his age, he was permitted to serve his sentence at home. In 2011, an appeals court overturned the sentence and ordered a lower court to re-sentence him. However, before this could occur, he died on February 20, 2012.
