Eucalyptus melanophitra is a mallet that typically grows to a height of but does not form a
lignotuber. It has rough, flaky grey bark on part or all of the trunk, smooth greyish bark above. The adult leaves are narrow lance-shaped, long and wide on a
petiole long. The flower buds are arranged in leaf axils in groups of nine or eleven on an unbranched
peduncle long, the individual buds on
pedicels about long. Mature buds are spindle-shaped, long and about wide with a conical
operculum about twice as long as the
floral cup. Flowering occurs between February and April and the flowers are pale yellow. The fruit is a woody, cylindrical to barrel-shaped
capsule long and wide with the valves near rim level. ==Taxonomy and naming==
