After completing high school, Farid studied civil engineering at the
Bandung Institute of Technology. Three months in the institute, Farid requested to drop out, stating that he wanted to pursue a different career path from his other brother, who had already been an engineer. His father approved his choice via telegram, and he moved to Jakarta to study medicine at the University of Indonesia. He graduated from the university in 1970 and received his license as a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1976. after defending his dissertation titled
Laparoscopy in the clinical investigation of infertile women. In his dissertation, Farid offered
laparoscopy, which was a new technology in Indonesia at that time, as a solution for infertile women. The dissertation, which was advised by Hanifa Wiknjosastro and Ratna Suprapti Samil, received the
cum laude distinction from its examiners. == Career ==
