He was elected to the
Senate of Pakistan from Sindh against technocrats seat on March 12, 2012. In March 2018, he was re-elected on general seat from
Sindh. On 20 August 2018, he was sworn in as Federal Minister of Law and Justice in the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan. He resigned on 26 November 2019, and presented his resignation in federal cabinet to represent the government in a case regarding Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa's tenure extension in the Supreme Court. On 29 November 2019, he was again sworn in as Federal Minister of Law and Justice in the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
