2020 census As of the
2020 census, Ferndale had a population of 19,190. The median age was 35.4 years. 12.1% of residents were under the age of 18 and 11.0% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 102.1 males age 18 and over. There were 10,029 households in Ferndale, of which 14.1% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 29.7% were married-couple households, 27.7% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 29.8% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.85. The median age in the city was 35.6 years. 16.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 41.2% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 8.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.9% male and 50.1% female.
