She received her B.A. from
California State University, Dominguez Hills; her M.A. (1998) and doctorate in history (2001) from
University of California, San Diego, with
Eric Van Young as her mentor. Before joining the faculty at Harvard in 2016, she earned tenure in the history department at the
University of California, Santa Barbara (2003–2016); and was assistant professor of history at
Michigan State University (2002 to 2003). From 2019 to 2020, she was member at the
Institute for Advanced Study in
Princeton, New Jersey.
