Hasan Gemici

Hasan Gemici was a Turkish freestyle wrestler and coach. He won the gold medal in the men's freestyle flyweight event at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and the gold medal in the same class at the 1951 Mediterranean Games in Alexandria.

Career
Gemici was born in Giresun on 15 June 1927. He began wrestling in İzmit in 1949 and soon established himself at national level. In 1951, he won the freestyle flyweight gold medal at the 1951 Mediterranean Games, a result that confirmed his place in the Turkish team for Helsinki. At the 1952 Summer Olympics, Gemici competed in the men's freestyle flyweight class, held from 20 to 23 July at Messuhalli in Helsinki. He opened with a 3–0 decision over Finland's Oiva Timonen, then defeated Leslie Cheetham of Great Britain by fall in 4:00 and Giordano Degiorgi of Italy by fall in 2:45. In the fourth round, he lost 2–1 on decision to Iran's Mahmoud Mollaghasemi, but he remained in contention and beat Japan's Yushu Kitano 3–0 in the fifth round. In the final medal round, Kitano defeated Mollaghasemi, leaving all three medalists with 1–1 records against each other. Gemici and Kitano were then tied on five bad points, and Gemici took the gold medal on the head-to-head tiebreak from his victory over Kitano. Gemici continued wrestling for a few more years, but his international career effectively ended after his Olympic victory. Under the amateur rules of the period, the financial reward given to Turkish Olympic champions led to his being treated as a professional. He retired from active competition in 1955. After retiring, Gemici worked as a wrestling coach in İzmit and later in Romania. He died on 25 June 2001 in Kocaeli from chronic renal failure. == References ==
