Hurricane David destroyed many homes alongside the river in the city of Santiago. Most of those people were relocated in what is now the town of Hato del Yaque. Hato del yaque had a population of 25,816 people in 2002. The population of its urban center in 2002 was 18,354 people. In 2024, President
Luis Abinader and Housing Minister Carlos Bonilla delivered 300 new apartments to local families as part of the government's Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque plan.
