Seyrig was born in
Héricourt, France, into a liberal bourgeois industrial family. His family later moved to
Mulhouse when his father joined the family business, and Seyrig was educated in German. He subsequently attended a French Protestant private boarding school in
Normandy, the École des Roches. He continued his education by studying English at
Oxford until 1914. During World War I, Seyrig fought at
Verdun and was decorated for his service. In 1917, he joined the Orient contingent in
Salonika, where he had his first encounter with archaeology and decided to leave the family business. He subsequently enrolled at the
Sorbonne, where he presented a thesis on the Homeric house. In 1922, he was admitted to the
French School at Athens, where he spent seven years as a member and was later promoted to the office of secretary-general. ==Career==
