2020 census As of the
2020 census, Holdrege had a population of 5,515. The population density was 1,303.8 inhabitants per square mile (503.7/km). The city had 1,370 families. The median age was 41.0 years. 23.3% of residents were under the age of 18 and 21.3% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there were 96.7 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males age 18 and over. 98.9% of residents lived in urban areas, while 1.1% lived in rural areas. There were 2,329 households in Holdrege, of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 50.8% were married-couple households, 17.8% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 25.6% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87. The median age in the city was 42.4 years. 23.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.3% were from 25 to 44; 28% were from 45 to 64; and 19.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.5% male and 51.5% female.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.93. In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older.
