Craven was nominated by President

United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, to a new seat authorized by 75 Stat. 80. He was confirmed by the
United States Senate on August 9, 1961, and received his commission on August 10, 1961. He served as Chief Judge from 1962 to 1966. His service terminated on July 5, 1966, due to elevation to the Fourth Circuit. Craven was nominated by President
Lyndon B. Johnson on June 13, 1966, to the
United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, to a new seat authorized by 80 Stat. 75. He was confirmed by the Senate on June 29, 1966, and received his commission on June 29, 1966. His service terminated on May 3, 1977, due to his death in
Richmond,
