Racial and ethnic composition 2020 census As of the
2020 census, the county had a population of 8,226, 2,727 households, and 1,891 families. The population density was 15.1 per square mile (5.8/km). The median age was 44.3 years; 17.1% of residents were under the age of 18, 7.5% were between 18 and 24, 26.5% were between 25 and 44, 28.3% were between 45 and 64, and 20.6% were 65 years of age or older. There were 2,727 households in the county, of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 53.4% were married-couple households, 19.3% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 22.3% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
