Cut Off, Louisiana

Cut Off had its start by the building of a canal cutoff at that point from Bayou Lafourche northeast to Lake Salvador, to shorten the route to New Orleans. The name (La Coupe, or "The Cut") was French in origin. ==Geography==

Cut Off is located in south-central Lafourche Parish at (29.515201, -90.333839), on both sides of Bayou Lafourche. It is bordered to the northwest by Larose and to the south by Galliano. Louisiana Highway 1 runs through the center of Cut Off, along the west bank of Bayou Lafourche, while Highway 308 runs along the east bank. Highway 3235, a four-lane highway, runs through the west side of the community. All three highways lead northwest into Larose and south into Galliano. Thibodaux, the parish seat, is to the northwest (upriver), and Port Fourchon on the Gulf of Mexico is to the south. }} 2020 census As of the 2020 census, Cut Off had a population of 5,533. The median age was 41.0 years. 23.5% of residents were under the age of 18 and 16.6% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 92.1 males age 18 and over. 93.8% of residents lived in urban areas, while 6.2% lived in rural areas. There were 2,128 households in Cut Off, including 1,711 families. Of all households, 53.4% were married-couple households, 13.5% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 24.4% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living in them, 21.1% were made up of individuals, and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 2,340 housing units, of which 9.1% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.9% and the rental vacancy rate was 12.4%. ==Notable people==

Lafourche Parish Public Schools operates public schools. • Cut Off Elementary School Larose-Cut Off Middle School is in nearby Larose, and serves Cut Off CDP. South Lafourche High School is in Galliano, and has a Cut Off postal address. It also serves Cut Off. Lafourche Parish Library operates the South Lafourche Library in Galliano, which has a Cut Off postal address. Damage from Hurricane Ida meant that the parish had to rebuild the inside of the library. Fletcher Technical Community College has Lafourche Parish in the college's service area.
