2020 census As of the
2020 census, Liberty had a population of 8,279, a median age of 37.8 years, 24.9% of residents under the age of 18, and 17.1% of residents 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 95.2 males age 18 and over. There were 2,421 families residing in the city. 75.1% of residents lived in urban areas, while 24.9% lived in rural areas. There were 2,955 households in Liberty, of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 47.2% were married-couple households, 17.2% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 30.2% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older.
