Honorary Scouts In 1911, President
William Howard Taft accepted the position of honorary president of the BSA, and each
U.S. president since has served.
Theodore Roosevelt was the only honorary vice-president, as he had left office before the honorary presidency began. In 1927, the Boy Scouts of America created
Honorary Scouts to distinguish "American citizens whose achievements in outdoor activity, exploration and worthwhile adventure are of such an exceptional character as to capture the imagination of boys...". The eighteen who were awarded this distinction were:
