Stan Wawrinka defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final, 6–7(1–7), 6–4, 7–5, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2016 US Open. It was his third major title; on all three occasions, he defeated the world No. 1 player in the final. Wawrinka saved a match point en route to the title, against Dan Evans in the third round. Djokovic was the third man in the Open Era to lose five finals at the same major.
