Michael Oskar 'Shorty' Newrzella was a German Federal Border Guard and operative of GSG 9, the counter-terrorism and special operations unit of the Bundesgrenzschutz. He was killed during an operation against the Red Army Faction in Bad Kleinen, where the terrorists Birgit Hogefeld and Wolfgang Grams were to be arrested after undercover informant Klaus Steinmetz alerted authorities to a planned meeting. Steinmetz was a German V‑Mann for the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Rhineland-Palatinate.
