Alistair Darling (1953–2023); UK politician. The former
Chancellor of the Exchequer owned a converted
blackhouse at Breaclete, and his mother's family were from the island. On 1 December 2015 he was created a
life peer, taking the title 'Baron Darling of Roulanish, of Great Bernera in the county of Ross and Cromarty'. •
