Mengesha won gold in the
2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Junior men's race in
Aarhus. In June 21 he shaved 27 seconds off his personal best in the
5000m going from 13:25.74 to 12:58.28 as he finished third in the Ethiopian Olympic trials behind
Nibret Melak and
Getnet Wale, ahead of the delayed
2020 Tokyo Olympics. In September 2024, he won the
Berlin Marathon with a personal record time of 2:03:17. In November 2025, he won the
