2020 census As of the
2020 census, Montesano had a population of 4,138. The median age was 43.0 years. 20.5% of residents were under the age of 18 and 22.3% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 93.9 males age 18 and over. There were 1,687 households in Montesano, of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 45.5% were married-couple households, 17.5% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 28.0% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 1,786 housing units, of which 5.5% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.1% and the rental vacancy rate was 4.1%.

The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.88. The median age in the city was 41.4 years. 21.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.1% were from 25 to 44; 28.4% were from 45 to 64; and 16.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.2% male and 50.8% female.

The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.92. In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18–24, 28.7% from 25–44, 23.6% from 45–64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males.
