Regional Competitions IAC hosts competitions both on the regional and national level in the
United States. Regional competitions often include individual, or "bee" competitions featuring buzzers, in which individuals are asked questions specific to these subjects. Additionally, regional competitions include iterations of history bowl, a 4-player, team event involving 4 separately formatted quarters in which 2 teams compete on the buzzer. Strong performance at regional competitions allows competitors in either bee competitions or history bowl to qualify for the National Tournament, which is held annually in
Arlington, Virginia for varsity divisions. Competitors may also qualify for the National Tournament through online or in-person exams testing knowledge of a subject.
National Championships National Geography Bee The National Geography Bee is a competition held at Nationals in which individual competitors compete in a 30-35 question per-round bee-format testing knowledge of all fields of geography. Similar to regional bee formats, competitors compete in a pyramidal-question format, with 3 combined buzzes allowed per question. In the preliminary rounds, competitors earn 1 point for each correct answer, and only receive -1 if they are the 3rd incorrect interrupt of the question. In playoff rounds, competitors receive between 3-6 points based on where they buzzed during a question, and receive -2 points for any incorrect interrupt, as well as -1 for an incorrect answer after the question is finished. The event's first iteration occurred in 2017, with its most recent champions being Siddhu Nagarajan from
Hillsborough High School in the Junior Varsity Division (9th and 10th Grade), and Pranavkrishna Bharanidharan from
Bella Vista High School in the Varsity (11th and 12th) Division.
National History Bee The National History Bee, founded alongside the National History Bowl, dates back to the founding of IAC and follows the same format as the geography bee, featuring mostly history questions as well as literature, fine arts, and historical geography. The competition has been held since the 2010 National Championships, and its most recent champions at the 2025 National Championships were Spencer Manning of
Stevenson High School in the Junior Varsity Division, and Robert Wang of
Livingston High School in the Varsity Division. == References ==
