New Media Film Festival

Founded in 2009 by Susan Johnston, the media futurist, the president of Select Services Films, Inc., the production and casting manager at Susan Johnston Casting, and a columnist for Rolling Stone and Authority Magazine. NMFF was first announced in 2009 in the virtual world of Second Life at Los Angeles Studios. Susan Johnston envisioned the festival as a response to the fast-paced changes in the media industry, aiming to bridge traditional narratives with future-forward technologies. The official announcement of NMFF took place during the virtual conference Immerse In The Future (2009), hosted on the Second Life platform, as a joint initiative between the Center for Conscious Creativity (3c) and the United Nations Millennium Project. Its mission is rooted in a commitment to advocating for creations by people of all ages, cultures, and media that are worth sharing. The first festival was held on May 21 and 22, 2010, in Los Angeles, with another event taking place in San Francisco on November 5 and 6 of the same year. Both events featured a variety of contents submitted from around the world, and introduced new media categories including Feature Length, Documentary, Shorts, 3D, Web series, Webisode, Mobisode, Mobile, and Shot on RED. In 2020, due to the global pandemic, NMFF tried an online form of the campaign. Since 2022, the festival has adopted a hybrid model that combines online and offline, including online and live Q&A sessions, to adapt to the changing media environment and audience needs. The 16th Annual New Media Film Festival was held on June 4–5, 2025, in Los Angeles. The event continued to emphasize inclusivity and innovation by hosting both in-person and virtual showcases. The festival offers $45,000 USD in awards, judged by professionals from leading organizations such as Marvel, HBO, PBS, BBC, and the Emmys. Winners not only receive recognition but also gain access to distribution channels, elevating their work within the industry.
