He was born in
Cargèse,
Corsica. He was a member of the
Radical Party of the Left, and was by profession a
lawyer. He was re-elected on September 21, 2008, in the first round. In this capacity, he served as Vice-President of the Senate's Committee on Laws from 2008 to 2014. He also served as interim President of the Assembly of Corsica in 1998, following health issues faced by Jean-Paul de Rocca Serra. He did not run for re-election in the 2014 senatorial elections in September. He was married and was the father of three children. Alfonsi died on 16 March 2020, of
