Although the city of Paine was only officially recognized in 1885, the territory that it comprises today was occupied by original ethnic groups, in particular by Picunches, in whose language, Mapudungun, payne means "celestial". ==Demographics==

With the arrival of the Spanish, the land was distributed as encomienda to different Spanish conquerors, passing from one owner to another through the years.
