Details about the background and training of the artist are scarce. Peeter Gijsels was baptized on 3 December 1621 in the
St James Church in Antwerp. He was the son of Peter Gijsels and Lucia Adriaens. His family was very poor and his father died when he was only 4 years old. Gijsels was registered in the records of the Antwerp
Guild of St. Luke as a pupil of the obscure painter Jan or Johannes Boots or Boets in the guild year 1641–1642. He became a master of the Antwerp Guild in the guild year 1649–1650. The artist worked in Antwerp during his entire career. His works were sold on the private market to the local aristocracy. He died in his hometown at the end of the year 1690. ==Work==
