Poplar-Cotton Center was first listed as an unincorporated place under the name Poplar in the 1960 U.S. census; The census reported that 99.6% of the population lived in households, 0.4% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized. 0.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 100.0% lived in rural areas. There were 609 households, of which 47.6% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 52.1% were married-couple households, 8.7% were cohabiting couple households, 23.2% had a female householder with no partner present, and 16.1% had a male householder with no partner present. 10.3% of households were one person, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
