Vaughan was born 24 March 1945. He read mathematics at
University College London, earning a bachelor's degree with second class honours in 1966. He completed his PhD in 1970 at the
University of London under supervision of
Theodor Estermann. He supervised
Trevor Wooley's PhD. After postdoctoral research at the
University of Nottingham and
University of Sheffield, he became a lecturer in 1972 at
Imperial College London. He was promoted to reader in 1976 and professor in 1980, and headed the Pure Mathematics Section from 1988 to 1990. Since 1999, he has been Professor at
