Lehr returned to politics immediately following the war, helping to establish the
CDU in 1945. Immediately following World War II, Lehr was appointed by the British military government to reorganize the administration of the North Rhine province. He focused heavily on securing food supplies for the starving population in the industrial Ruhr region. In 1948 as a member of the Parliamentary Council (
Parlamentarischer Rat) which drafted the West German constitution, he famously proposed a different flag design that looked like the US flag, but with German colors (black, red, and gold). He was named the governor of the
North Rhine-Westphalia province by occupying
British troops. He belonged to the German
Bundestag from 1949 until 1953. Lehr remained active in other areas of society as well, serving as President of the ‘’Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald’’, an environmental association, from 1947 until 1956 and acting as the head of the ‘’Marburger Universitätsbund’’ from 1952 until his death. He also served as President of the ‘’Industrial Club of Düsseldorf’’ during this time. Lehr died on 13 October 1956 at the age of 73 in Düsseldorf. ==Further reading==
