Salon music

Salon music is a genre of Western classical music originating in Europe during the 19th century. The subcategory of Romantic music is defined by its array of short works, including nocturnes, romances, variations, and virtuosic displays that were performed in privately-hosted domestic, social settings, called "salons."

Salon composers
Many popular composers wrote at least a few pieces which fall into the category of salon music. Some pianists composed only salon music, but many of these specialists have become highly obscure.
