Hagedorn served on the Midland Park Borough Council from 1951 to 1957. He was sworn in as mayor on January 5, 1958, and served in that position until 1967. In the wake of the 1964
Supreme Court decision
Reynolds v. Sims, which required the creation of state legislature districts as equal in population as possible, the 1973 elections were the first with a 40-district map, in which Hagedorn became part of the
40th Legislative District. In the State Senate, Hagedorn was an advocate for efforts to address
child abuse. Hagedorn sponsored legislation that created the
New Jersey Department of Corrections and the New Jersey Department of Human Services from the Department of Institutions and Agencies. While in the State Senate, he served as Minority Leader during the Governorship of
Brendan Byrne. He died of a heart attack on August 9, 1985, while on vacation in
Belfast, Maine. ==Legacy==
