2020 census As of the
2020 census, there were 35,319 people, 14,395 households, and 9,264 families residing in the county. The median age was 43.5 years, with 22.2% of residents under the age of 18 and 20.2% 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 94.5 males age 18 and over. Of those households, 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living in them, 49.8% were married-couple households, 18.0% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 26.7% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. 28.7% of residents lived in urban areas, while 71.3% lived in rural areas.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93. In the county, the population was spread out, with 24% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males. The median income for a household in the county was $33,434, and the median income for a family was $41,454. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,722 for females. The
