2020 census As of the
2020 census, South Milwaukee had a population of 20,795 and included 4,429 families. The median age was 41.4 years. 20.7% of residents were under the age of 18, 7.4% were from 18 to 24, 26.2% were from 25 to 44, 27.3% were from 45 to 64, and 18.4% were 65 years of age or older. 49.3% of residents were male and 50.7% were female. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 96.3 males age 18 and over. There were 9,039 households in South Milwaukee, of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 40.7% were married-couple households, 22.4% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 28.6% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.93. The median age in the city was 40.3 years. 21.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26% were from 25 to 44; 28.1% were from 45 to 64; and 15.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
