The project was launched in 2019 as a part of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. The Sports Boulevard was one of four initiatives established in 2019 along with
King Salman Park,
Riyadh Art and Green Riyadh with an estimated cost of $23 billion in government funding. In October 2021, the foundation was awarded contracts worth $661.5 million for the project's construction phase one. In July 2024, Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman announced the Global Sports Tower as part of the Sports Boulevard. Standing 130m high, the tower will be the tallest of its kind and will include 30 different sports facilities. In February 2025, the first phase of the project was officially opened to the public. The first phase included five key destinations, which are: • Wadi Hanifah • The Promenade • A section at the intersection of Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Rd. and Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Al-Awwal Rd. • Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University internal loop • The first phase of Sands Sports Park.
