2020 census As of the
2020 census, Puyallup had a population of 42,973 and a median age of 38.1 years. 21.6% of residents were under the age of 18 and 16.3% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 92.1 males age 18 and over. All residents lived in urban areas while none lived in rural areas. There were 17,012 households in Puyallup, of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 46.4% were married-couple households, 17.6% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 27.1% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 18,106 housing units, of which 6.0% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.9% and the rental vacancy rate was 6.3%.

The average household size was 2.43 persons and the average family size was 2.98. The median age in the city was 36.8 years. 23.6% of residents were under age 18; 10.2% were between ages 18 and 24; 27% were from 25 to 44; 26.8% were from 45 to 64; and 12.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.0% male and 52.0% female.

The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.08. In the city, the age distribution of the population shows 27.3% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.
