His first role was as a professor and assistant
dean at the
Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Schutte was president of the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) in Philadelphia from 1975 to 1982. Schutte served as 14th president of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence from 1983 to 1992. During his time at RISD, he led the opening of the Design Center in
Hope Block and Cheapside (1986) and acquired 20 Washington Place (1988). His final and longest role as 11th president was at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, from 1993 to 2017. At Pratt, Schutte worked to eliminate the deficit, revitalize the campus, and doubled the enrollment. ==Death==
