There were 11,589 households in the county, 29.4% of which had children under 18, 51.3% were married-couple households, 18.0% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present, and 23.3% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present. About 27.9% of households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 12,540 housing units, of which 7.6% were vacant; among occupied units, 76.4% were owner-occupied and 23.6% were renter-occupied. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98. The median age was 40.3 years.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.40 males.
