On June 13, 1966, Gray was nominated by President
Lyndon B. Johnson to a seat on the
United States District Court for the Southern District of California vacated by Judge
Harry Clay Westover. Gray was confirmed by the
United States Senate on June 29, 1966, and received his commission on July 2, 1966. Gray served in that capacity until September 18, 1966, when he was reassigned by
operation of law to the
United States District Court for the Central District of California, to a new seat established by 80 Stat. 75. He assumed
senior status on March 26, 1982, serving in that capacity until his death on February 10, 1992, in
Pasadena, California. The William P. Gray Legion Lex American Inn of Court in Orange County is named in Gray's honor. ==References==
