Windows Sound System

Windows Sound System (WSS) is a sound card specification developed by Microsoft, released at the end of 1992 for Windows 3.1. It was sold as a bundle which included an ISA sound card, a microphone, a pair of headphones and a software package.

Drivers
WSS 1.0a drivers were released in February 1993. They introduced single-mode DMA, supported games in MS-DOS, Ad Lib and Sound Blaster emulation. WSS 2.0 drivers, released in October 1993, added support for OEM sound cards (Media Vision, Creative Labs, ESS Technology) and included an improved DOS driver (WSSXLAT.EXE) that provided Sound Blaster 16 compatibility for digital sampling. However, they did not provide support for FM or "wavetable synthesis". Base I/O: 530-537 (One of several settings as well 604-60B, E80-E87, F40-F47). Main I/O of the board. Just like 220-22F of the SoundBlaster, 530-537 (all one of the other values) is of this board. Base I/O: 220-22F SoundBlaster emulation, (One of several 230-23F and 240-24F are there SoundBlaster options). Base I/O: 388-38B (OPL3). Interrupt Request: 7 (one of several settings 9, 10, 11). DMA: 1 (one of several settings as well 0,1 and 3). DMA: 0 (one of several settings as well 0,1 and 3). Just like the Sound Blaster 16 some of these settings would hide themselves or reveal themselves depending on what you click. ==References==
