List of Indian summiteers of Mount Everest

The first attempt to summit Mount Everest by Indians occurred in 1960, led by Brig. Gyan Singh. The first Indians to reach the summit were a group led by Captain M.S. Kohli in the 1965 Indian Everest Expedition. A total of 422 Indians made 465 attempts to summit from 1965–2018, including 43 repeat attempts by 29 climbers. There have been 81 attempts by 74 Indian women, including seven repeat attempts by four female climbers.

1960 The first Indian expedition to attempt to scale Everest was in 1960 by an Indian Army team led by Brigadier Gyan Singh and was unsuccessful. Climbers Colonel Narendra Kumar, Sonam Gyatso, and Sherpa Nawang Gombu reached but turned back due to bad weather. 1962 The second Indian expedition to attempt to scale Everest was in 1962 by an Indian Army team led by Major John Dias and was also unsuccessful. Climbers Captain M.S. Kohli, Sonam Gyatso, and Hari Dang reached but turned back due to bad weather. 1992 The 1992 expedition to Mount Everest by Indo-Tibetan Border Police was led by Major Hukam Singh and recorded a total of eight ascents by Indians, including Santosh Yadav. The 21-member team was led by Bachendri Pal. The expedition set several world records, including the largest number of persons (18) on a single expedition to climb Mount Everest, and largest number of women (7) from a single country to climb Mount Everest. Santosh Yadav became the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice while Dicky Dolma became the youngest woman (19 years old) in the world to climb Everest. 2001 The 2001 Indian Army Mount Everest Expedition was led by Colonel Krishan Kumar. During this expedition, 15 people reached the summit - 7 of them were Indians and 8 were sherpas. On 22 May 2010, Arjun Vajpai became the youngest Indian to reach the summit at the age of 16 years, 11 months, and 18 days. The first woman in the world to scale the summit of Mount Everest twice in a season (and the first to do so within 5 days). It is also the fastest double ascents of the tallest crest by a woman. This was her fifth summit and thus she became the most time climbed Indian woman. She has also climbed 4/7 continents' highest peaks. 2. Muthamilselvi Narayanan A Tamil Nadu-based, 34 years old, a mother of two daughters is the First Tamil Woman to scale the world's highest peak Mount Everest (2023) and as a First Tamil Woman to scale Five Summits, the Five highest continental peaks of the world within short duration within 267 days (May 2023~March 2024). She has received the "Kalpana Chawla - 2023" Tamil Nadu government state award for successfully done the Mt. Everest summit. Also, she has received the popular media Aval Vikatan's award "Singappen 2023". 3. Ashish Singh He is an Indian mountaineer, entrepreneur, and author. A certified mountaineer, he has climbed 20+ Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, which he summited on his first attempt on 23 May 2023. He has also completed the first ascent of a 6,105-meter virgin peak and summited Lobuche East (6,119 m). Singh is also the author of the book Life with Uncertainties, where he shares reflections on resilience, challenges, and personal growth. 2024 1. Kaamya Karthikeyan is an Indian climber who lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Kaamya had earlier summited Mount Everest on 20 May 2024, becoming the youngest Indian and the second youngest female in the world to climb the peak from Nepal side. 2. Jyoti Ratre is an Indian mountaineer from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. In May 2024, she became the oldest Indian woman to summit Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, at the age of 55, breaking the previous national record of 53 years. 3. Satyadeep Gupta- created world record by dual Everest and Lhotse climb in less than 12 hours. 2025 1. The largest expeditionary force to reach the summit of Mount Everest consisted of 49 climbers from the Indian Army Adventure Wing, including 22 members of the Indian Army and 27 Sherpas, who successfully summited on 27 May 2025 as part of the Indian Army's Silver Jubilee Everest Expedition, led by Lieutenant Colonel Manoj Joshi, marking one of the largest coordinated summit efforts by a single organized team on the world's highest mountain, having a Guinness World Records Title. 2. The National Cadet Corps (NCC) expedition team successfully summited Mount Everest (8,848 m) on 18 May 2025, marking a significant milestone for the organization. The expedition comprised 10 NCC cadets, including five boys and five girls, along with four officers, two Junior Commissioned Officers, one Girl Cadet Instructor, and 10 Non-Commissioned Officers, reflecting a structured and gender-balanced representation within the team.
