The 9th district consists of the central urban areas of the
Gateway Region, including the cities of
Clifton,
Passaic, and
Paterson. The incumbent was Democrat
Bill Pascrell, who was re-elected with 55.0% of the vote in 2022.
Democratic primary Pascrell defeated Mohamed Khairullah, the mayor of
Prospect Park, in the June primary, but died on August 21, 2024. On August 29, the Democratic Party chairpersons of Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson Counties selected
