2020 census As of the
2020 census, Brown Deer had a population of 12,507. The median age was 42.8 years. 20.5% of residents were under the age of 18 and 20.4% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 88.5 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 84.4 males age 18 and over. 100.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.0% lived in rural areas. There were 5,524 households in Brown Deer, of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 39.8% were married-couple households, 18.7% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 35.0% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 5,865 housing units, of which 5.8% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.0% and the rental vacancy rate was 8.6%.

Latino of any race were 3.9% of the population. Brown Deer is one of only three Milwaukee suburbs (
Glendale and
West Milwaukee being the others) where African-Americans make up at least 10% of the general population. There were 5,275 households, of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were
married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals living alone, and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.91. In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 12.8% from 25 to 34, 20.7% from 35 to 49, 21.5% from 50 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
