Rolling Stone, in a review of the album, noted that the song featured "Ginger Baker's highly innovative percussion" and judged the lyric "...I'm wasted and I can't find my way home" to be "delightful". ==Cover versions==

The song has been covered by musicians and bands of different genres, often in the style of the original. Gilberto Gil covered it in his 1971 self-titled album Gilberto Gil (Nêga) in both a studio version and a live recording. Ellen McIlwaine covered it in her 1972 album Honky Tonk Angel. American blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt performed the song on tour in 1972. Bootleg recordings exist of an in-studio concert by Raitt and Lowell George featuring the song, on October 17, 1972, from Ultrasonic Studios on Long Island and broadcast on WLIR-FM. John P. Hammond and Freebo are also featured. One recording of this performance of the song has more than 7 million views on YouTube. Eric Clapton tapped actress and singer Yvonne Elliman to sing "Can't Find My Way Home" during his 1976 and 1977 concert tours. In 1989, American band Swans covered the song on their album The Burning World with Jarboe providing the vocals. In 1993, the song was covered by Spin 1ne 2wo, a band assembled by guitarist Phil Palmer, with Paul Carrack on vocals and keyboards, drummer Steve Ferrone, Rupert Hine (producer, keyboards) and bassist Tony Levin. Two notable versions have been heard on screen: one by American singer Alana Davis in 1999's The Mod Squad film, and another by American bluegrass singer Alison Krauss for the 2003 soundtrack of the television series Crossing Jordan.
